Our team at the TMJ & Orofacial Pain Treatment Centers of Wisconsin is thrilled to announce that in 2020, the field of Orofacial Pain received specialty recognition by the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards, making it the 12th specialty recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA).
So what does this mean for you, the patient?
For years, patients suffering from orofacial pain disorders, including (but not limited to) temporomandibular disorders (TMD), headaches, and neuropathic pain conditions, have struggled to find the help that they need. These patients often report that they have seen numerous providers across medical and dental disciplines prior to finding themselves in our chair. During this frustrating, time-consuming, and expensive process, the unfortunate reality is that many patients ultimately proceed with treatment interventions that are not evidence-based and are often irreversible. We hope that specialty recognition will provide clarity for patients when choosing their orofacial pain provider. While there are exceptions, the majority of orofacial pain conditions, including TMD, can be effectively managed with conservative, reversible, and affordable treatments. If you are struggling with orofacial pain, our providers would be honored to evaluate you and offer their guidance as specialists in the field.
